Arezzo Guide

An Arezzo guide revolves around the city’s many historical sights, and although perhaps not as picturesque as its neighbours Florence or Cortona, it does however have much to offer. For instance, the charming Piazza Grande and Corso Italia, where you will see the locals gathering to stroll and chat. It was also used as the location for some of Roberto Benigini’s film Life is beautiful.

About Arezzo

One of the first places to visit is the Chiesa di San Francesco. This 14th century church has works by Piero della Francesca and a rather interesting chapel. Next is the Pieve di Santa Maria, which is a great 12th century Romanesque church with an arcaded facade. Inside this church is a piece by Margherito di Arezzo and a silver bust of the city’s patron saint. Beside it is a 14th century tower.

Arezzo Cathedral

The Cathedral, on top of the hill, has a gothic interior which houses works from Piero della Francesca, terracotta images from della Robbia workshop and the tomb of Pope Gregory. The Chiesa di San Domenico on the other hand, contains a crucifix painted by Cimabue, fresco’s by Spinello Aretino and a statue by della Robbia of San Antonio. Beside the Church is the Museo di casa Vasari, which was built and luxuriously decorated by Vasari.

The Museo Archeologico and the Roman amphitheatre are also worth visiting, the former has a good collection of Etruscan and Roman artefacts, as are the Museo d'Arte Medievale e Moderna and the Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra.
